We’ve all heard about, we’ve all thought about it but have we actually understood what double cleansing is and whether or not we should be doing it? At first I had no real clue at all, I thought it was something to do with using a micellar water and then a cleanser or just washing your face with the same product twice over. Truth be told I’ve never really looked into it until recently and actually it makes a lot more sense to me now. Let’s get it out there early – I’m no skin expert at all but I’ve done some online research that I’m going to share with you for you to make your own call on the skin revolution that is double cleansing.
So what actually is double cleansing?
The idea behind the method started in Korea (as most good skin routines do) and the principle is simple – use an oil based cleanser to draw out any dirt and grime blocking your pores and follow it up with a water based cleanser for the actual cleaning of your skin.
It makes sense to me now as when removing eye makeup I would always prefer the oil enriched Garnier micellar to the normal one – and I didn’t know why until now! It’s this environmental grime and makeup that causes our pores to become blocked and breakouts to occur so it’s actually a really important step that an oil based cleanser can really get in and tackle.
So in reality, I wasn’t wrong to be using an oil based micellar first followed by a standard cleanser. I was double cleansing without realising it!
What if I don’t wear makeup?
Even if you don’t wear foundation or any makeup on your skin, there are still many pollutants in the air (especially if you work in a city) and so double cleansing is still a great way to give your skin the best chance possible.
We’re into summer now, are you wearing suncream? As much as the stuff is so good for your skin in terms of anti ageing, wrinkles and sun spots, it is a bloody nightmare at clogging up pores so you really want to make sure you’re not leaving any on your face at the end of the day. (NOTE: Wear suncream! You can always unblock those pores but you can’t undo that sun damage).
Imagine the first step is like removing an outer layer leaving it exposed so that the second cleanser can actually do its job properly.
However, if your skin is particularly dry or sensitive then you might want to try just an oil based cleanser and a good rinse or speak to a dermatologist for proper advice.
I have oily skin and am worried about using an oil based cleanser.
This is something I learnt from The Body Shop years ago – often skin produces more oil because it think it’s lacking it, using oil based products can actually help balance that over production out over time. But this isn’t the case for everyone and so if you’re worried about it then I recommend speaking to a dermatologist before making significant changes to your skincare regime as it’s really important that you use the right oil based products for you.

These are just the basics of a good skincare regime, it’s really important that you research what is right for you and speak to a dermatologist if you have any concerns. Skincare can be a really confusing area and with so many different product launches weekly it can be really difficult to know what’s right for you. I have always been very fortunate with my skin and don’t often get breakouts and have never had acne but I do have an uneven skin tone so that is one of the things I’m looking to at the moment. I’m writing a post about my skincare dos and don’ts so make sure you come back for that one as there are things we often get wrong when putting a skincare regime together.
My main piece of advice that I want to leave you with on the subject of cleansing is that you should always do it – I can’t believe when I was a teen I went to bed with just a face wipe but as soon as I put together a routine, after a month I realised I couldn’t not do it (like brushing your teeth) and I’ve never skipped a day. I also have a quick routine that I do if I get in late or simply don’t have the energy but more often than not I carve out some me-time after dinner to pamper my skin and make sure that the products I spend so much money on get the chance to do their job properly. Happy cleansing!
